How to work out what size battery I need?
Sizing a battery for your home often involves a number of considerations.
- Do you have existing solar panels
- how much power are you using during the day
- how much power you are using at night
- do you need backup power
- how much excess solar are you currently producing
If you have an existing solar system the quickest and easiest way to size a battery is to compare how much power you are sending to the grid, you can either see this on your monitoring platform or you can check your power bill. If you have an Ergon power bill it will say ' Export or Qld Bonus Scheme'. Look at the total exported and divide by the number of days. Ie if you have exported 900kwh's over 90 days then you export 10kwh's per day.
This means that with the current size solar system you have 10kwh of excess solar being produced during the day that you can divert to a battery. The ideal battery size would be around 8kwh. The other consideration is to look at how much power you are still buying each day. Get the total number of kwh's divide by the number of days, this is also on the first page of your power bill under the heading 'Average daily consumption'. If this is 15kwh's then potentially to get your power bill to zero you may need a couple more solar panels and a larger battery.
Great thing with BYD and Sungrow Battery options is that you can ad battery storage in small manageable modules. So you don't have to get it perfect. You can go with a battery solution that fits your budget and then ad to it later. Or if you find your consumption is increasing, you can add extra batteries and possible extra solar panels to offset the extra costs.
